ROG Ally X Crushes Black Myth Wukong! Optimal Settings Guide 1

Hey everyone, ETA Prime is back, and on the ROG Ally X, we will be delving into Black Myth: Wukong today! In this guide, I’ll show you some gameplay, walk you through the settings I personally use for this game on the Ally X, and let you know how long these settings should last your battery. Now let’s get started!

First Impressions

I must confess that for a few days following the release of Black Myth: Wukong, I fell asleep on it. Now, let’s move on to the settings. I wasn’t sure if it would be worthwhile, but I ultimately made the decision to give it a go after seeing a ton of gameplay videos. And I’m totally captivated, I have to say! On the ROG Ally X, this game offers a great balance of performance and visual fidelity, and it’s an incredible blast.

Performance Settings

When configured properly, the ROG Ally X performs remarkably well when handling Black Myth: Wukong. What I suggest is as follows:

TDP Settings

  • Manual TDP: Set to 20W.
    • For even better performance, you can increase this to 25W if you’re hooked into the wall.
  • Performance Mode: Defaults to 17W, but 20W offers a more consistent experience.

Display Settings

  • Resolution: 900p (Borderless)
    • The integrated display on the ROG Ally X is at its best in this area. You can set it to 720p to get a greater frame rate.
  • Frame Cap: 60 FPS
    • If you find screen tearing annoying, you can turn on V-Sync, however I haven’t used it in this method.
  • Motion Blur: Off
    • I’m not a fan of motion blur, but feel free to enable it if you prefer.

Graphics Settings

  • Super Resolution Scale: 60% using AMD’s FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution)
  • Frame Generation: AMD’s frame generation is turned on to help boost performance.
  • Graphics Quality: Set to Low
    • Given that we’re on an iGPU, this is necessary to maintain smooth gameplay.

Advanced Tips

  • If you’re seeing dips below 60 FPS, consider:
    • Dropping the resolution to 720p.
    • Increasing TDP to 22W for better stability at 900p.

Gameplay and Battery Life

Let’s go on to some gameplay now. If you watch the frame rate, you’ll see that we typically stay above 60 frames per second. While there are sporadic reductions below 60 FPS, they are rare and often occur at 56 FPS. As the device won’t be straining to reach higher frame rates, locking the frame rate at 60 can assist prolong battery life.

You may even reach about 80 frames per second in settings with shorter draw distance or enclosed spaces. But keeping it locked at 60 frames per second may help to prolong the life of your battery while also reducing any dips. Black Myth: Wukong works flawlessly on the ROG Ally X with these settings, providing a fun portable gaming experience.

Battery Life Expectations

With these settings, you may anticipate a respectable amount of battery life. The Ally X has a powerful battery that you can rapidly top off in between uses because it supports 100W fast charging. In my testing, I discovered that you can achieve even longer battery life by freezing the frame rate and maximizing the TDP, so you may continue playing without worrying about running out of juice.

The Benchmark: A Light Taste of the Action

Let’s start by discussing the benchmark itself. Overall, it’s fairly good and gives you a good feel of what this game can do for the ROG Ally X. But in comparison to the real action, I found that the benchmark is a little light—especially when there are a ton of adversaries on screen.

The majority of the benchmark consists of you strolling around a forest with little to no action—no significant fights, no dazzling magical effects, simply a tranquil stroll. It gives you an idea of what your system is capable of, but it doesn’t give the best depiction of the most intense parts of the game. It would have been considerably more representative of what to expect in actual gameplay if the benchmark had included a battle scenario with more characters and effects.

Real-World Gameplay: The True Test

Let’s now shift our focus and discuss how the ROG Ally X responds to Black Myth: Wukong during a fierce combat. I played with the settings I described in the previous guide, which were 900p, low FSR, and 60% resolution scaling. On average, I got about 63 frames per second. Considering that real-world gameplay circumstances are frequently more demanding, this is marginally lower than the 70 FPS average I obtained in the benchmark.

Total Battery Draw and Power Efficiency

I’ve brought the wattmeter up on screen to show you exactly what’s going on underneath the hood for those of you who prefer to monitor power consumption. This is the summary:

  • TDP: 20W
  • Total Battery Draw: 28-29W
  • This covers everything, including the 50% brightness screen, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth that are both turned on, and the RGB lighting that surrounds the analog sticks, which is currently at 30% brightness.

You’re drawing a total of 28–29 W with these settings, which is rather efficient given all that’s going on. With my current settings, the ROG Ally X has an 80Wh battery, which should last you about two hours and thirty minutes of gaming.

Maximizing Battery Life

If you’re looking to extend your playtime, there are a few tweaks you can make:

  • Drop the resolution to 720p: This will reduce the total draw to around 25W.
  • Lower the TDP to 17W: You’ll still get smooth gameplay, but with a lower power consumption.

By making these changes, you may extend your battery life to roughly three hours and fifteen minutes, which is respectable for a handheld game like Black Myth: Wukong.

Final Thoughts and Recommendations

All in all, Black Myth: Wukong on the ROG Ally X has been a ton of fun. Although a little light, the benchmark offers you a place to start, but this gadget really shines in real-world gameplay. With the appropriate settings, you may have a fluid, eye-catching experience without using up too much battery life.

You can be confident that this game works flawlessly on your ROG Ally X, even if you were unsure about purchasing it. Playing it at top speed allows you to really immerse yourself in the action. As usual, please leave a comment below if you would want to see any other game evaluated on the ROG Ally X or any other x86 handheld. I appreciate you watching, and I’ll see you in the next one!
